The new take on Barack Obama’s iconic 2008 poster replaces “HOPE” with “SOLD,” and features “Honest Politician” Gil Fulbright — a satirical Senate candidate created by advocacy organization Represent.Us to draw attention to the corrupting influence of Money in American politics.
“You deserve complete honesty, so here it is: I don’t care about you.” said Fulbright in a recent campaign video. “Unless you are a donor or a lobbyist who can write a big, fat check, the result that you get from voting for me is negligible”
The HOPE-SOLD is the latest work of street artist Shepard Fairey - a parody of his own most well-known work.
The project reflects a growing sense cynicism and betrayal felt by voters — progressive and conservative — about the corrupting influence of money in elections and politics. “Our goal is to transform the frustration felt by voters into a powerful movement to actually fix our broken government” said Represent.Us director Josh Silver.
